What is the Difference Between KITAS and KITAP, and How to Process Them?
ITAS (Limited Stay Permit)
The Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) is an official document issued by the Indonesian government to foreign nationals to reside in its territory for a specific, limited period. The duration is usually adjusted to the employment contract, commonly 6 or 12 months.
Every foreign national in Indonesia must hold a residence permit. A Limited Stay Permit is granted to:
- Foreign nationals entering Indonesia with a Limited Stay Visa.
- Children born in Indonesia to a father and/or mother holding a Limited Stay Permit.
- Foreign nationals granted status change from a Visit Stay Permit.
- Captains, crew members, or foreign experts on ships, floating devices, or installations operating within Indonesian waters and jurisdiction under applicable law.
- Foreign nationals legally married to an Indonesian citizen.
- Children of foreign nationals legally married to an Indonesian citizen.
ITAS Requirements
- A valid and legal passport
- Integration statement, except for children under 18 years old and unmarried
- The foreign national's existing ITAS
- Guarantee letter from a sponsor (if applicable)
- Sponsor's ID card and/or family card (if applicable)
- Spouse's/parent's/child's ITAS (if joining a family member holding ITAS)
Expiration of ITAS
The Limited Stay Permit expires if the holder:
- Returns to their home country and does not intend to re-enter Indonesia.
- Returns to their home country and does not return within the validity of the Re-Entry Permit.
- Obtains Indonesian citizenship.
- Has the permit expired.
- Changes status to a Permanent Stay Permit.
- Has the permit revoked by the Minister or Immigration Officer.
- Is subject to deportation.
- Passes away.
ITAS Extension
- For a validity of 1 year: application must be submitted no earlier than 30 days before expiry and no later than the last day of ITAS validity.
- For validity longer than 1 year: application must be submitted no earlier than 3 months before expiry and no later than the last day of ITAS validity.
- Applications paid before expiry are not considered overstay, even if processed after the ITAS validity ends.
- Extensions are granted 1 day after the ITAS expires.
- 1-year extensions for students are granted by the Head of Immigration Office.
- 2-year or longer extensions for nationals of Calling Visa countries require approval from the Director General.
- Extensions for Seafarer ITAS or certain entities are granted by the Director General or designated officer.
- If ITAS requires a commitment statement, extensions can only be processed once the commitment is fulfilled.

ITAP (Permanent Stay Permit)
ITAP is issued to foreign nationals holding a Permanent Stay Permit for an unlimited period. Holders are required to report every 5 years to the Head of the Immigration Office in their place of residence.
ITAP Reporting Procedure
- Submission of Permanent Stay Permit report
- Photo capture
- Approval by the Head of Immigration Office or designated officer
- Issuance of updated Permanent Stay Permit with new reporting date
- Reporting must be submitted no earlier than 3 months before and no later than 1 working day before the ITAP expires.
- Late reporting may only be processed with consideration from the Head of Immigration Office.

- Proof of religious activities (if applicable)
- Recent bank statement
- Updated company deed
- Latest land and building tax (PBB)
- Latest financial report
- Latest company tax report
- Latest proof of income
- Latest bond certificate
- Latest share ownership certificate
- Other supporting documents proving the intention to stay in Indonesia
